How do I choose a citation manager?

Answer

All citation managers help with the following tasks:

  • Exporting a batch of references from a database
  • Organizing references in folders
  • Sharing citations with research groups
  • Creating a bibliography of citations in a variety of styles
  • Inserting in-text citations as you write

In general, EndNote Fusion (formerly RefWorks) is a good option for relatively small projects. It is user-friendly, supports collaboration, and is no-cost to Hopkins affiliates. The desktop version of EndNote is a better option for large projects like evidence syntheses (systematic reviews, scoping reviews, etc.).
