Dr. Patricia Brennan, Director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), gave a moving and energetic presentation on "NLM: A Platform for Biomedical Discovery and Data-Powered Health" (Strategic Plan, 2017 - 2027) Dr. Brennan spoke of the National Library of Medicine as the “instigation engine” for knowledge and research, and provided vivid examples of the role Data-Powered Health will play in the future of patient care.

Dr. Brennan stressed that by “looking at care from cell to society” will significantly augment and empower the overall relationship between patient, treatment, and science. By introducing FAIR Data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) the NLM is positioned to initiate “Data as an active part in people’s health lives.”
Relaying major points from the NLM Strategic Plan, Dr. Brennan focused on all the participants needed to energize the NLM’s efforts to mount a campaign of enhanced engagement. She also introduced specific goals and challenges facing the present and future of Healthcare, such as identifying the proper communication vehicle: Does it presently exist, or does the future hold more than Instagram, Facebook or Twitter currently provide?

Smart community engagement is therefore critical to assuring NLM’s resources most effectively reach our wide range of audiences — from librarians to researchers and clinicians, from teenagers to their parents, from policymakers to healthcare professionals.” --NLM Strategic Plan
