On November 6, 2017, Jeffrey Beall, Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of Colorado at Denver, spoke at a well-attended presentation at Sheldon Hall inside the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Professor Beall coined the term, "predatory journals", and described how he focused on characteristics that define the nature of these journals.  Chiefly, he addressed the prominent issues that exist within the predatory realm, such as a fake or pretend peer review, the low quality of scholarship, and how predatory journals pollute the world of legitimate scholarly work.

Professor Beall also explained how predatory journals tend to create a facade by imitating authentic journals, using their website styles, fonts, color, and "look-alike science" schemes, in order to gain trust from users.
