Additional Access Instructions

Self-Registration: You must set up an account in Aviary. Please follow these steps:

  • Click on the main database link above. Click on “Login” in the upper right corner, and then “Join Now” at the very bottom of the pop up page. Fill out the Join Now form and then Register.
  • Respond to the Confirmation Email after you submit the form and Login with your email and password.
  • Search and Request Access to Testimonies: After conducting a search, click on a testimony in the search results and then request access. Please note that our records truncate last names of those who gave testimony to protect their privacy. If you are looking for a specific person’s testimony, either shorten their last name to the first initial (“Eva B.”) or contact the archive directly. You should receive an approval email a few minutes after you make your request.
  • View Testimonies: Once you've received your email with request approval, you can view all testimonies in the collection.
  • Our testimonies are not just available for research–we also release excerpts of them for use in publications, documentaries, films, podcasts, and other media. Licensing is required and limits on testimony usage may apply. We encourage you to contact us to learn more.
  • Finally:  The Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies requests submission of notification of how and where testimonies are to be used in a publication. We request this information in order to notify survivors or their heirs in advance of any public use of their testimony. We require researchers to cite and give proper credit to the Fortunoff Archive if they use our collection materials. If you are publishing a quote from or citation of a testimony from the Fortunoff Video Archive, please fill out this form.
